In the past the New York Knicks have given oft-injured forward Amare Stoudemire a minutes restriction and for the most part, it seemed to work well.
However with Stoudemire in the final year of his contract it appears as if the Knicks plan to get everything they can out of the veteran as head coach Derek Fisher says there will be no minute restrictions for Amare Stoudemire this season.
“Right now there aren’t any minute restrictions, or he can only play the front of a back to back, or any of that,” coach Derek Fisher said after practice on Sunday.
What Fisher did go on to say was that the New York Knicks coaching staff has predetermined rest days in place for Amare Stoudemire which seems to suggest he probably won’t be on the court very much (if at all) during the second half of a back-to-back tilt.
For what it’s worth, Amare Stoudemire has previously mentioned that he feels great and suggested that he can play over 30 minutes per game. That might be a little aggressive for both he and the Knicks, though even getting a constant 25-minutes per night from Stoudemire should help the Knicks on the offensive side of the ball.
Defensively it’s likely the team will struggle though that’s not the lone fault of Stoudemire as the team overall needs more defenders on their roster.
We’ve heard reasons for optimism regarding Amare Stoudemire before so everything needs to be taken with a grain of salt, though perhaps this season the former All-Star truely is healthy and a solid season is possibly in store.
The New York Knicks have yet to decide on their starting power forward so it’s not known if Amare will be coming off the bench.
