For five years, the Detroit Pistons have been stuck in the mud.

They’ve thrown money at the wrong players while firing the right coaches before hiring the wrong ones again. The Pistons have spent the last five years shuffling the same deck of cards. Outside of drafting Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond, they’ve constantly added jokers and made missing the playoffs an annual tradition.

But coming off the most disappointing of those seasons, there’s hope.

In comes Stan Van Gundy, the team’s best coach since Larry Brown. Not only will Van Gundy attempt to bring the best out of the Pistons polarizing roster, but he’ll also be tasked with improving it as the team’s president.

Words cannot describe how much of a coaching improvement Van Gundy is over last season’s duo of Maurice Cheeks and John Loyer. If the Pistons are going to be better this season with essentially the same roster as last, it’s because of Van Gundy.

The NBA is commonly referred to as a player’s league, but when you look at the legitimate contenders, they’ve got the players and the coach. On paper, it seems like the Pistons have the coach and at least one player in Andre Drummond — that’s a step in the right direction.

Detroit is still a long way from being a contender, but if Van Gundy is still the great coach he was with Orlando and Miami and can get the most out of Drummond starting this season, the Pistons should be on their way out of the mud soon.
