Michael Sam was released by the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday afternoon, and despite those who want to make his sexuality a story, Sam actually kept a low profile with the team.

There has been a lot of bigotry spewed over Michael Sam playing in the NFL, with people who think they are speaking with well intentions actually saying stupid things about how Sam was used for press coverage. Of the offensive things said about Sam, this is perhaps one of the most infuriating and it also happens to be untrue.

Not everyone agrees with Michael Sam’s sexuality and not everyone has to — this is America after all and freedom sometime rings in stupidity. But while folks were busy hating on the fact that Michael Sam was gay, the most dangerous people were those saying the St. Louis Rams and Dallas Cowboys brought Sam on to exploit his sexuality for extra coverage.

Long time Dallas reporter Jean-Jacques Taylor has shot this notion down, pointing to how low key Sam was with the Cowboys as the ultimate proof.

That’s not a mic drop to all those saying the Sam signing was for PR, but it’s incredibly damaging to that narrow point of view. The fact that the Cowboys released Sam after the need for his talents had evaporated highlights the fact that this was a football move and anyone trying to argue otherwise is either misinformed or trying to keep the story alive for personal motives.
