While the Knicks have high hopes for Andrea Bargnani, his injured hamstring says otherwise

The New York Knicks will be without forward Andrea Bargnani for Wednesday’s preseason game against the Washington Wizards and could be without him for next Wednesday’s regular season opener against the Chicago Bulls.

Bargnani has played just 19 minutes of the preseason, all of which came during an October 8 loss to the Boston Celtics, where he scored eight points and five rebounds before sustaining the injury.

His injury is a major crimp to the Knicks’ plans to properly install new coach Derek Fisher’s triangle offense. Former Knicks star guard John Starks felt that Bargnani was capable of having a bounce-back season after he scored 13.3 points and 5.3 rebounds while appearing in just 42 games with the Knicks last year.

“This is a tailor-made offense that’s good for guys who can shoot the ball, especially big guys, and he’s one of the best in the league that can stretch the defense,” said Starks. “So I’m looking for him to have a very big year.”

Quincy Acy, who has started the previous four games in place of Bargnani at power forward, will likely get the starting nod again.

The first overall pick of the 2006 draft by the Toronto Raptors, Bargnani has been hounded by injuries for much of his career. The 6’10 native of Italy has never played a full season, having appeared in a career-high 80 games in 2009-10. He has not played in more than 66 games in a season since.

Bargnani has averaged 15.1 points and 4.9 rebounds in his career, averaging a career-best 21.4 points per game in the 2010-11 season.
