The San Francisco Giants are off to a fast start in the 2014 World Series. Playing the Kansas City Royals on the road in front of a rabid crowd at Kauffman Stadium, the Giants’ offense scored three runs in the first inning and staked Madison Bumgarner to an early lead.

The rally started with a lead-off single from Gregor Blanco. He advanced to second base on a Joe Panik fly ball, then to third base on a single from catcher Buster Posey. With James Shields clearly struggling to settle in, the Giants pounced with two clutch hits.

Pablo Sandoval reached down and delivered an RBI double to the right field corner.

Posey getting thrown out at the plate ended up being significant, because Hunter Pence followed up Sandoval’s double with a shot of a home run over the right-center field fence.

“Big Game” James Shields has not lived up to his name this postseason, and that continued on Tuesday night in Game 1 of the World Series. The Royals will have their work cut out for them as they try to come back against Bumgarner.
