25 Years After Back To The Future II, The Hoverboard Is Real

A California couple has created a working hoverboard—like Marty McFly had in 1989’s Back to the Future IIand a Kickstarter has been launched to fund production.

When Marty McFly went to the future in 1989’s Back to the Future II, he ripped off a skateboard-looking thing from a kid in 2015, but it didn’t have wheels.

A quarter-century later, a California couple named Jill and Greg Henderson have made the hoverboard a real thing.

The Hendersons hope to put the Hendo Hoverboard into production by next July and have

launched

a Kickstarter campaign in hopes of raising $250,000 to “put the finishing touches” on the board.

A pledge of $10,000 or more gets a donor their very own Hendo Hoverboard.

The campaign took off like wildfire. In just one day, the project has already raised $259,948 from more than 1,300 backers (as of 5:54 Eastern on Wednesday).

Signe Brewster of Gigaom took the hoverboard for a spin and said that it felt like “standing on a giant air hockey pick hovering three-quarters of an inch above the ground.”

There is a catch: The Hendo Hoverboard can only be used over a non-ferrous metal surface. So jumping on it to head downtown to hang with friends is still awhile away.

The Hendersons admit there is still more to do to perfect the technology.

This video from Mashable details the project:

With the funding goal met, the first round of Hendo Hoverboards will be available next October.

And when the price tag comes down from $10,000, someone might have to start dropping hints to the significant other about the coolest Christmas gift ever.
