Sure, it’s easy to predict what NFL team a state will support but what about the individual county? You may assume that the results are the same though you’d be wrong, at least some of the time.
Take for instance the Oakland Raiders. You’d likely believe they’ve carved out a piece of the Northern California pie, right? Nope – in fact they aren’t even the favorite team in Alameda County as that territory shockingly belongs to fans of the San Francisco 49ers fans.
The interactive map which displays such was created by Twitter in partnership with the NFL and shows off some interesting facts as it breaks down NFL fanbases by their county.
The Bay Area battle isn’t the only interesting thing to note as the Carolina Panthers have finally taken a firm grasp in their locale which was once very strong Washington Redskins territory.
In addition the map also shows how dominant some teams are in rival territories like the Denver Broncos and Dallas Cowboys who have essentially taken control over the vast majority of the central United States. The Minnesota Vikings also have a pretty significant influence, something you may expect more out of the Green Bay Packers who seem localized to Wisconsin.
Also, how about the Dallas Cowboys infiltrating California and randomly being the favorite team in San Bernadino County, California? Also Sierra County, New Mexico is totally going against the grain and supporting the Denver Broncos is strict Dallas Cowboys territory.
It’s a pretty interesting map and shows areas around the country that you may not normally expect to support a particular NFL franchise.
