Lovie Smith Says Buccaneers Won’t Name Starter
By Clinton Cole
Lovie Smith and the 1-6 Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not ready to name a starter for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings.
According to Andrew Aastleford of Fox Sports Florida, Bucs head coach Lovie Smith doesn’t believe his team has a quarterback controversy on their hands between Mike Glennon and Josh McCown. The Bucs have one of the NFL’s worst records this season.
Josh McCown saw a little bit of practice time Wednesday, but only in a limited role. McCown, who sprained his thumb against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 3, hasn’t practiced in over a month.

In that time, the Buccaneers turned to second-year quarterback Mike Glennon. The former North Carolina State quarterback has only thrown for less than 250 yards per game in his four-plus games.
McCown, whom the Bucs signed to a two-year, $10 million contract in March, didn’t exactly blow the roof off in his first three starts. He threw for only two touchdowns and four interceptions.
After several unsuccessful seasons under Greg Schiano, the Bucs signed the former Chicago Bears head coach to a four-year deal with an option for a fifth for a maximum of $25 million.
Lovie Smith hasn’t seen much success so far, as the Bucs have only defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers.
In a battle of two teams that had much higher hopes for 2014, the Bucs and head coach Lovie Smith look to be playing this one as close to their chest as possible.
Even if healthy, is Josh McCown the best option for the Bucs? That’s for Lovie Smith to decide.
