The NHL has announced that the Ottawa Senators will play the Toronto Maple Leafs on a later date

According to Pro Hockey Talk, the National Hockey League has come out and officially postponed tonight’s game between the Ottawa Senators and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

More from NHL

"The game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators, scheduled for tonight at Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, has been postponed, the National Hockey League announced today. The date and time of the rescheduled game will be announced at a later date. The National Hockey League wishes to express its sympathy and prayers to all affected by the tragic events in Ottawa."

The league was expected to make a statement about the game not long after news broke that shooters were attacking across Ottawa. There were shots fired at the National War Memorial and the Canadian Parliament building.

The story exploded on social media, with hockey fans across North America sending their prayers to the Canadian capital.

This is the second time in the past calendar year that the league has had to re-schedule a game. The first time was March 10th, 2014, when Dallas Stars forward Rich Peverley collapsed on the bench during the team’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Fans can assume that, like with the last game, the league will allow the game to be played in the same arena (Canadian Tire Centre), despite the vast difference in circumstances.
