The West Virginia Mountaineers and the Virginia Tech Hokies were once proud, card-carrying members of the Big East just a few years ago. Now, though, each have move to different conferences, with West Virginia finding a home in the Big 12 and Virginia Tech residing in the ACC.

With this, the two schools have not had the opportunity to continue their rivalry on the athletic fields of play, however that will be changing soon.

On Wednesday it was announced by West Virginia that they will begin playing the Hokies in varsity sports, beginning in the 2014-15 season.

West Virginia Athletic Director and College Football Playoff committee member Oliver Luck released a brief statement on the huge news as well.

“It only makes sense for these two great land grant institutions, with long and rich athletic histories, to be competing against each other in the athletics realm,” West Virginia Director of Athletics Oliver Luck said. “Many of our sports teams have long-standing rivalries with Virginia Tech, the oldest dating back to baseball in 1905. This border rivalry is good for the fans and coaches and it provides great competition for the student-athletes. I applaud the teamwork and cooperation of both schools to get the Black Diamond Challenge finalized. It’s a win-win for both institutions and for college athletics in general.”

Of course, with this news, a lot of the focus will be on these two clashing on the football field, something they have not done since the 2005 season, a game which the Hokies dominated en route to a 34-17 victory.

Earlier this year the two schools announced an agreement to play one another on the gridiron in 2017.
