The Kansas City Royals found themselves in a 2-2 tie game in the sixth inning against the San Francisco Giants in Game 2 of the World Series on Wednesday night.

That gave manager Ned Yost an excuse to make aggressive moves to set up his usual winning formula. He put in Jarrod Dyson to get his elite defensive outfield into place, shifting Lorenzo Cain over to right field. Yost brought in Kelvin Herrera to get his powerful late-inning relievers involved after they were non-factors in Game 1. None of these moves would have been possible if not for the solid work of starting pitcher Yordano Ventura.

The rookie 23-year-old came through in the biggest spot of his career. He was not necessarily spectacular, but he was certainly good enough to put the Royals in a position to win by doing what they do best in the late innings against the Giants.

Ventura’s final line: 5.1 innings, 8 hits, 2 runs, 2 strikeouts, and no walks. That is efficient and shows a nice job of minimizing the damage. Ventura exited in favor of Kelvin Herrera as Yost went to his bread-and-butter relievers to keep the score tied at 2-2.

Following up a disastrous Game 1 start by James Shields for the Royals, this was a truly outstanding effort from the young Ventura in a situation in which he had a tremendous amount of pressure placed on him.
