Brian Urlacher Should Be Praised for Ripping Jay Cutler
By Ryan Heckman
Brian Urlacher had some choice words regarding his former quarterback, Jay Cutler, but was he out of line?
This season has not been anywhere close to where most thought it would be for the Chicago Bears. For some experts, they thought the Bears could be a Super Bowl favorite. Others disagreed, though still had them pegged as a playoff team. Even a few experts said what many fans took by surprise: Jay Cutler could win the NFL MVP award in 2014.
Obviously, with a record of 3-4 and heading into the next two weeks facing a 5-2 New England Patriots team and 5-2 Green Bay Packers team, the Bears are in a sad, sad state.
Brian Urlacher went on the “Kap and Haugh” show Wednesday afternoon to give his thoughts on the current state of the Chicago Bears and, specifically, quarterback Jay Cutler.
“Financially, he is one of the elite guys in the NFL. If you look at his contract, he was paid like an elite quarterback,” Urlacher said.
“We say it every year how talented Jay is, how much talent he has. But the NFL is not a talent contest. It’s a winning contest. You want to win football games, that’s what it comes down to.”
Here is the harsh reality of the Jay Cutler era in Chicago: One playoff win — one.
Yet, fans continue to want to point out how much talent the guy has. Urlacher said it best — the NFL is not a talent contest. If it was, Cutler would probably come dangerously close to winning it all. Sure, he’s got a rocket arm. Sure, he’s proven he can make all of the throws necessary. Sure, he’s tough as nails and gets up after receiving some brutal hits.
But, with all of that said, the guy can’t win!
“If your quarterback can’t make plays in certain situations for you to win games, he’s not getting the job done,” Urlacher went on.
“You look at the Bradys, the Mannings, the Rodgerses, the Breeses. Those guys win every year. Even with no one around them. [Aaron] Rodgers has no offensive line, he wins. [Tom] Brady has no receivers, he wins.
“You look at Jay, he’s got Brandon [Marshall], Alshon [Jeffery], Matt [Forte] and a great offensive line, Martellus Bennett and they can’t seem to put it together for some reason. I’m not sure if it’s his fault, but for some reason they can’t seem to figure it out.”
“If your quarterback can’t make plays in certain situations for you to win games, he’s not getting the job done” – Brian Urlacher
What intelligent football mind can disagree with those statements? I’ll be so bold to say that if you even remotely disagree with Urlacher, you are a complete fool. You are lying to yourself, and until you figure that out, you will be living in denial with false expectations year in and year out until Cutler finally gets the boot.
The Chicago Bears have by far the best receiving duo in the league today — maybe even the best offensive skill players altogether. Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery are two big, strong, physical, athletic, Pro Bowl wide receivers. Matt Forte has consistently given the Bears 1,300-plus yards from scrimmage in each of his years as a pro, proving he is a dual-threat running back that can beat you in several ways. Martellus Bennett may be a head case at times, but the 6-foot-6 tight end is quick, strong and athletic. The guy is one of the best in the game, having a phenomenal season thus far, and hasn’t even hit his ceiling yet.
What more does Cutler want? His weapons are pretty much served up to him on a silver platter. All he has to do is utilize them. Do you have any idea how many quarterbacks would kill to have the weapons Chicago boasts? Imagine that Tom Brady had those four; Andrew Luck, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Philip Rivers — heck, even Russell Wilson. I’d be hard pressed if the Bears didn’t win a Super Bowl with any of those quarterbacks in the time it’s taken for us to continue giving Cutler a pass.
At this point, Cutler is out of excuses.
I take that back. Fans, at this point, you are out of excuses. To continue giving this mediocre quarterback excuse, after excuse, after excuse, is inexcusable! The window has passed. The talk about Jay Cutler’s “potential” should be long gone by now. Urlacher is right. He’s been in the league nearly a decade, and we’re still talking about potential?
Why?
Jay Cutler is Jay Cutler. There is absolutely, positively no chance in the world that anybody can change that. You get what you get with Jay Cutler.
They say insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Are the Chicago Bears insane? Is Jay Cutler insane? That just might be the case. He continues to make the same mistakes. He continues to lose games when he should have been able to win them. He’s been given everything and more in order to get the job done, but he continues to prove how incapable he is of doing just that.
