Manchester United has extended an offer to former Barcelona goaltender Victor Valdes with an opportunity to rehab with the club, as the veteran continues recovering from a knee injury.

The Spanish superstar sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament in March, which resulted in Valdes unable to compete in the World Cup.

Valdes’ rehab will be supervised by the Manchester United medical staff, which will be the first step toward Valdes making a bid for training with the first team.

Current Reds manager Louis Van Gaal, who made the offer, has had previous experience with Valdes when the two were in Barcelona in 2002-2003. It was only after Van Gaal left when Valdes finally was named the club’s starting goaltender. Currently a free agent, Valdes turned down a contract with Barcelona after appearing in over 500 matches during his 12 years with the club.

“Being the goalkeeper at the club is a big weight to carry and I have felt it since I was very young,” Valdes said when he originally made the decision to move on in May 2013.

“There is a lot of pressure, and the demands I put on myself to make sure Barca win is a heavy weight to carry.”

Valdes is one of the most decorated goaltenders in recent memory, as he has taken part of 21 major titles, including six La Liga and three UEFA Champions League crowns. He is also a five-time winner of the Zamora Trophy, which goes to the Spanish goaltender with the lowest goals to game ratio.
