While it appears that third string quarterback for the Washington Redskins, Colt McCoy will get the ball for Monday’s game against Dallas, Robert Griffin III still has a shot at playing.

Right now, former third string quarterback out of Texas Colt McCoy will be the starter for the Washington Redskins against the 6-1 Dallas Cowboys, but Robert Griffin III continues to get healthier and could end up with the ball in his hands.

According to CSN’s Tarik El-Bashir, Redskins head coach Jay Gruden likes the way that Robert Griffin III has been practicing.

“He looked good,” Gruden said of Griffin’s practice performance Wednesday. “He’s progressing along. We’ll see where he is tomorrow and the next day.”

Robert Griffin III’s original back up quarterback, Kirk Cousins was benched during the second half of last Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans after going 10-for-16, 139 yards no touchdowns and one interception in the first half. Replacing him was former Texas star Colt McCoy who was impressive going 11-for-12, 128 yards and one touchdown to help give the Redskins a 19-17 win. Right now, he’s the starter for Monday night’s match up.

“Right now, yeah, he is,” Gruden said of McCoy’s status as the starter. “I’ve already made the decision it’s going to be Colt. I said that Robert would be the wild card, possibly, if he is ready to go and that still hasn’t been decided yet.”

During the interview Wednesday, Gruden said that the decision will be made on Thursday.

“I’d like to make the decision tomorrow after practice, really,” Gruden said. “Just because I want A) the team to know who the quarterback is; B) the quarterback to know who the quarterback is and C) we need to know who it is for game plan purposes. So, we will battle this thing and try to get a better idea tomorrow after practice where we are going.”

Colt McCoy is in his fifth NFL season and disappeared from national spotlight after his struggles with the Cleveland Browns. He was impressive at Texas as well as in last weeks win over Tennessee and looks like he shows some potential at the position if Robert Griffin III likely can’t go Monday. Plus, the game is in AT&T Stadium and Colt McCoy is very much loved in the state of Texas. We’ll see if the Redskins can give the streaking 6-1 Cowboys a run for their money on Monday.
