After being unable to come to terms during the summer, the Detroit Pistons may put Greg Monroe on the NBA trading block

It was a tough summer for Greg Monroe and the Detroit Pistons.

After the Pistons made former Miami Heat and Orlando Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy their head coach and president, they made a few moves before focusing on Greg Monroe, a restricted free agent.

However, the two sides couldn’t work out a deal. Greg Monroe wound up signing his qualifying offer in order to become an unrestricted free agent in 2015. That’s why many believe the Pistons could trade Greg Monroe.

“I also expect Monroe to be available,” writes Larry Coon of Basketball Insiders. “When a restricted free agent accepts his qualifying offer, he’s taking less money and accepting less security (a one-year deal) in exchange for becoming an unrestricted free agent the following season. Players don’t do that because they want to stick around — they do it because they want to get paid, on their own terms. So I’m sure Detroit will put him on the block.”

Coon even believes the league’s most high-profiled teams could get involved, mentioning both the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers.

“But that doesn’t mean the Lakers are going to be the team that produces the best offer,” Coon explained. “Everyone thought Kevin Love was coming to LA as well. Instead Cleveland ponied up an offer that blew away anything the Lakers could have offered.”

The New York Knicks are another team many believe will be in the mix to acquire Greg Monroe, at least after the season.

Of course, Greg Monroe would have to approve of a trade. He can’t be be traded without his consent and will lose his bird rights if he is dealt.

Greg Monroe averaged 15.2 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 49.7% from the field and 65.7% from the free throw line last season.
