There is only a week left for NBA teams to reach contract extensions with players selected in the 2011 NBA Draft. The

Cleveland Cavaliers

gave point guard Kyrie Irving a max extension, the

Denver Nuggets

worked out a deal with power forward Kenneth Faried and most recently, the

Orlando Magic

extended center Nikola Vucevic.

Perhaps the most high-profile player, in terms of drama this summer, Golden State Warriors’ guard Klay Thompson, still hasn’t been extended and many believe he won’t be, at least not before he becomes a restricted free agent in the summer of 2015.

“Nevertheless, this scenario is relatively unlikely despite the Warriors’ willingness to roll the dice by offloading salary with draft assets in the past,” explained Nate Duncan of Basketball Insiders. “But maintaining flexibility for next summer is another motive to wait on an extension.  Unless Thompson is willing to move off his demand for a maximum salary, the only real incentive the Warriors have to acquiesce now is the threat of a Parsons-style offer sheet that may not actually be forthcoming from another team (you can read about that here).  It remains to be seen whether that will be enough.”

Keeping your options open and preserving flexibility is usually a good move but if Klay Thompson has a big season, he could get a four-year max offer in the offseason that either forces the Warriors to match of even offer a five-year deal.

Klay Thompson averaged 18.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 44.4% from the field, 41.7% from beyond the arc and 79.5% from the charity stripe. Klay Thompson has gone for 16.0 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 43.5% from the floor, 41.0% from three and 82.7% from the charity stripe in his career.
