While Dion Waiters has been involved in plenty of trade rumors, the Cleveland Cavaliers decided to exercise his fourth-year contract option, the team announced, extending his deal through 2016. Waiters, the former fourth overall pick in the NBA Draft out of Syracuse, is expected to play a significant role for the Cavs along with LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love this season.

For his career, Waiters averages of 15.3 points, 2.6 rebounds and three assists in 29.2 minutes per game in his two seasons with the Cavaliers. He is guaranteed to make $5.1 million for the 2015-16 season.

While the extension does not mean Waiters will remain with the Cavs through the remainder of his contract, it does make him a building block that can either be developed in Cleveland or traded for another piece.

If Waiters thrives off the bench and can become one of the better scoring sixth men in the league, his price tag for the next two years will be a bargain. If it seems that there are just not enough shots to go around after the Big Three have had their fill, Waiters could be flipped for a big man who can beef up Cleveland’s interior defense.

This was another no-brainer on day many second-year player are have their options picked up by their respective teams. Waiters is a valuable asset, no matter the wild card he can be. The team just needs to figure out how to use him. James said recently he wanted Waiters to be more aggressive, and not feel like he needs to pass so much now that he’s on a team with a four-time MVP and a double-double machine.
