55. 34. 46. Final. 51

The Pittsburgh Steelers held off a second half comeback from the Indianapolis Colts for a victory in a shootout game on the week 8 NFL schedule.

Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers knew better. They knew better than to count the Indianapolis Colts out, even after they held a 35-10 lead over Andrew Luck and company in the second of their week 8 game on Sunday. As such, the Steelers kept their foot on the gas in this game, never letting up and going on to win in impressive fashion by a final score of 51-34.

The story of this game was Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh offense. They jumped out to a big first half lead and then put the game away in the second half with relentless success, in the passing game in particular. All told, the man known as “Big Ben” threw for 522 yards and six touchdowns. That put him within arm’s reach of the all-time mark for passing yards in a game, which stands at 555.

Antonio Brown was unsurprisingly the main target for Roethlisberger, catching 10 passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Rookie Martavis Bryant pitched in two touchdowns, and veteran tight end Heath Miller had 117 yards and a touchdown of his own. It was an incredible showing from a Pittsburgh offense that has been inconsistent at best in recent seasons.

Like you knew they would, the Colts mounted a dramatic comeback in the second half. As they did, this score came more and more to resemble a college football score.

Luck threw for 400 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. He had a couple wide receivers with huge games of their own. T.Y. Hilton had six catches for 155 yards and a touchdown. Donte Moncrief chipped in seven catches for 113 yards and a touchdown, doing most of his work as he filled in for Reggie Wayne.

For everything spectacular that Andrew Luck has done in his career and even in this game, he had a most unfortunate gaffe in the fourth quarter that arguably put this game away. With the Colts within one score at 42-34 and potentially threatening to tie the game up, Luck fell on his rear near his own end zone and took an intentional grounding penalty for the safety.

Momentum is a fickle concept, and sometimes it is just pure nonsense. In the case of this game, however, it felt like the Colts absolutely fell flat when this comical safety happened. From there the Steelers’ offense was just too much, and the Colts lost a tough game on the road.

The Colts are now 5-3 on the season. Their next game is on the road against the New York Giants on Monday night football. The Steelers are now 5-3 and will face the Baltimore Ravens in a key AFC North game next weekend on Sunday night football.
