After trading Joel Anthony for Will Bynum, the Boston Celtics were expected to release the veteran guard. That made the cut official Monday, trimming the roster to 15 for the NBA regular season.

The Boston Celtics announced that the team has waived Will Bynum, as expected, trimming its roster to 15 in the process. The Celtics also cut Tim Frazier, Rodney McGruder, Erik Murphy, Christian Watford and Jarell Eddie.

Bynum, who was acquired from Detroit in a trade for Joel Anthony earlier in October, averaged 8.7 points, 1.8 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 18.8 minutes per game in 56 games for the Detroit Pistons last season.

The move was expected as soon as the trade went through, and should save the Celtics about $900,000 this season. ESPN Boston’s Chris Forsberg has more on the trade details and financial implications of the move:

"The Celtics acquired Bynum from the Detroit Pistons earlier this month in a cost-saving swap that sent out Joel Anthony. The team pursued additional deals in hopes of not having to eat a guaranteed contract, but came up empty.By waiving Bynum, the Celtics will stomach his $2.9 million contract. The team remains about $2 million under the luxury tax line ($76.8 million) with a total commitment of roughly $74.8 million entering the season."

The Celtics were deep at guard, with Rajon Rondo returning, rookie Marcus Smart needing playing time and Avery Bradley playing with a new contract. The team also has Even Turner, Marcus Thorton, Phil Pressey and James Young who will figure somewhere in the rotation.

The Celtics traded Anthony because they were moving forward with Kelly Olynyk and Jared Sullinger as the primary bigs, and acquired Tyler Zeller over the summer–who likely took the last remaining minutes away from Anthony.

Bynum should have an opportunity somewhere else in the league, and could take the minimum to play for a contender.
