You’d think a wide receiver who tallied 157 yards and a touchdown in a blowout victory would get nothing but praise for his effort, but that wasn’t the case for Sammy Watkins of the Buffalo Bills.
The rookie wideout had a career day but drew the irritation of many on the sideline, including head coach Doug Marrone who blasted the young star for blowing a touchdown due to showboating.
Watkins, after blowing by a defender, caught a deep pass from quarterback Kyle Orton and looked to have a clear path for a touchdown. The closest defender giving chase was a good three or four feet behind Sammy Watkins but that’s when the former Clemson product decided to raise his hand in the air, slowing down as he approached the end zone.
That was all the New York Jets defender needed as he was able to catch up to the taunting Watkins who was tackled before he could score. Understandably, frustration regarding Sammy Watkins’ poor decision was amass on the Buffalo Bills sideline.
“I said, ‘There were people on that sideline’ — meaning his teammates — ‘that were upset,'” Doug Marrone told reporters after the game. “We’re playing our butts off and we don’t have time for stuff like that. Those are the things we have to work on — winning and growing up.”
Sammy Watkins is of course not the first player to blow a touchdown because he began his celebration early nor will he be the last. However that might the be last time he attempts to showboat before he hits the end zone given the amount of understandable flack he’s received.
Thankfully the boneheaded moment didn’t cost the Bills as they easily defeated the Jets.
