The Ole Miss Rebels lost a key member of their top-ranked defense, as linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche broke his ankle in the loss to Louisiana State University and will miss the rest of the season.

Ole Miss’s 10-7 loss to the #24 LSU Tigers on Saturday somehow got even worse today, as the formerly-undefeated #3 team in the nation also got word that LB Denzel Nkemdiche, a key player on one of the top defenses in NCAA, will miss the rest of the season with a broken ankle.

Nkemdiche was hurt in the first quarter of the loss, and had 28 tackles and a sack on the season. Serderius Bryant will replace Nkemdiche in the starting lineup for the Rebels. Nkemdiche is a redshirt junior, and coach Hugh Freeze confirmed he underwent surgery Sunday.

Nkemdiche wasn’t the only Ole Miss player banged up in the loss; safety Cody Prewitt and Nkemdiche’s brother, defensive lineman Robert Nkemdiche, had undisclosed injuries and starting left tackle left Saturday’s game with a biceps injury, though he returned to the loss. All three players are considered day-to-day.

The Rebels will have to heal quickly, as they will face the Auburn Tigers this weekend, and now know not to expect Denzel Nkemdiche to be of any help going forward.
