It’s only 48 minutes into the season, but Anthony Davis left his calling card when it comes to Most Valuable Player candidates as he paved the way for the New Orleans Pelicans’ 101-90 win over the Orlando Magic in the 2013-14 regular season opener on Tuesday night.

Davis scored 26 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and his nine blocked shots kept him shy of a triple double for the Pelicans, who pulled away from the Magic late in the first half before breaking the game open in the third quarter. Davis capped off his night with an emphatic dunk with 3:40 remaining, helping New Orleans overcome a sluggish shooting night.

The Pelicans shot just 41 percent from the field and a putrid 48 percent from the charity stripe, missing 16 of 31 free throw attempts. Fortunately for New Orleans, their defense rose to the occasion, limiting Orlando to a paltry 38 percent from the field.

Ryan Anderson came off the bench to add 22 points and nine boards for the Pelicans, who outrebounded the Magic by a 62-55 margin.

Nikola Vucevic had 15 points and 23 rebounds for the Magic, yet it was Tobias Harris who led Orlando with 25 points while also grabbing eight rebounds.

Orlando rookie point guard Elfrid Payton sputtered in his debut, scoring just four points, although he did add a game-high seven assists.
