The Erie Otters of the OHL have maybe this season’s hottest arsenal- and that’s 17-year-old Connor McDavid.
The forward has 11 goals and 34 points in the first 12 games of the OHL season; he’s considered around the league to be the next big ‘franchise cornerstone’. On Tuesday afternoon, though, it took it to a really ridiculous level- when a shot he took went off the crossbar during practice, the puck literally exploded.
No, I’m so serious.
McDavid’s assistant coach, former NHL-er Jay McKee, took a picture and tweeted it that afternoon. The Connor McDavid hype train has officially switched to express- as if fans couldn’t get enough of the kid already.
Really, has anyone ever seen a puck explode from the impact? Can Zdeno Chara even do this?
There’s always a player worthy of the hype when approaching the NHL Entry Draft, but the league hasn’t seen a potential first overall pick this good since Sidney Crosby. For those who don’t remember, Crosby went first overall a decade ago, then put up a jaw-dropping 102 points in his rookie NHL season.
Just for comparison- Crosby had 168 points his final season in the QMJHL. McDavid is currently on pace to score 3 points a game- at the very least- which would put him at around 180 or so points for the whole season.
Yeah.
