The Atlanta Falcons signed former Carolina Panthers safety Charles Godfrey after having released safety Thomas DeCoud, who was signed by the Panthers.

The Atlanta Falcons and the Carolina Panthers essentially made a waiver-wire trade after the deadline when each team released a safety, only to watch the other sign him. The Falcons completed such a transaction when they signed former Panther Charles Godfrey, per the team’s website. The Falcons waived safety Sean Baker to make room on the roster for Godfrey.

Godfrey could find a breath of fresh air in Atlanta as a safety once more after having been moved to the nickel cornerback position in Carolina. He struggled in that role to the point that the Panthers cut him. The Falcons however were more than happy to nab a chance to improve their safety corps.

Atlanta has been a mess on defense for most of the year, giving up the fourth-most passing yards per game along with the second-most overall yards against per game. Mired in a five game losing streak to enter their bye week, the Falcons must re-assess every aspect of their roster if they’re going to even return to respectability in 2014.

For now, it appears that run for respect begins on defense, where the team could certainly use help. However, their offensive line is still a mess and their skill players are still underachieving. How the Falcons address that this year and beyond will have a bigger effect on where they go from here.
