Life began to get better for Los Angeles Lakers rookie forward Julius Randle less than 24 hours after his NBA debut was cut short by a devastating injury that resulted in a broken leg.
Shortly before undergoing surgery to repair his leg, Randle received a pair of surprise guests in the form of Houston Rockets All-Star guard James Harden and forward Trevor Ariza, who dropped by to visit Randle. The gesture left Randle in good spirits before going under the knife.
Randle suffered a clean break in his right tibia, but is expected to make a full recovery. He was originally expected to miss between 4-6 months, but an official timetable won’t be known until a further evaluation.
The seventh overall pick in this past June’s draft, Randle was expected to eventually overtake starter Carlos Boozer and become an impact player at power forward. He played just 14 minutes in Tuesday’s 108-90 loss to the Rockets, finishing with two points and a turnover. He is the latest Lakers player to be hampered by injuries, as point guard Steve Nash was lost for the season with a back injury, while shooting guard Nick Young will be out until late November with a broken thumb.
Ed Davis is expected to take the bulk of Randle’s minutes. Davis scored 11 points and added six rebounds and two blocks in 22 minutes on Tuesday.
