There has been no progress when it comes to the Carolina Panthers’ bid to lock up QB Cam Newton to a long-term deal, yet both sides will use the offseason to resolve the matter.

No news is good news when it comes to the Carolina Panthers and Pro Bowl QB Cam Newton getting together for a long-term deal.

The two sides had one discussion about a new contract during the offseason and were unable to make progress on keeping the cornerstone of the franchise in Carolina for the long haul. Neither side has brought up the matter thus far in the regular season, making it very likely they will use the offseason to hammer things out.

Newton will make just over $7 million this season, yet is slated to make $14.6 million in 2015, the final year of his rookie contract.

The first overall pick of the 2011 draft has seen his fellow QB mates from that class receive hefty raises this year. San Francisco 49ers signal caller Colin Kaepernick signed a six-year, $114 million deal, while Cincinnati Bengals field general Andy Dalton reached an agreement that will pay him $96 million for the next six seasons.

For now, Newton is the 17th highest-paid quarterback in the league, which has him earning less than Oakland Raiders backup Matt Schaub ($8 million) and injured Sam Bradford of the St. Louis Rams ($17.6 million). He is the fifth highest paid on the Panthers’ roster, trailing suspended DE Greg Hardy, DE Charles Johnson, TE Greg Olson and C Ryan Kalil.
