You never want to see your star quarterback spitting up blood on the sideline, but that’s what Carolina Panthers fans saw in the team’s Thursday Night Football game against the New Orleans Saints.

Newton to a shot to the head earlier in the game, though it’s unclear if that’s what caused him to spit up blood from an apparent bitten tongue.

Suffice to say, Newton is the center piece of that Panthers offense. Taking any shot like that is scary for coaches and fans. A lot of times we talk about smaller, more athletic quarterbacks and wonder if they can stay healthy in the NFL.

We didn’t question that with Newton coming out of Auburn. He’s just so darn big. But a shot to the head is an equalizer. It just doesn’t matter how strong you are at that point.

He should be fine and didn’t come out of the game. But Newton might want to think about sliding in the future.
