There has been a lot of speculation about the future of Cleveland Cavaliers’ big man Tirstan Thompson. There are many who feel the Cavaliers need a rim protector in the middle and that trading Tristan Thompson would be the best way to acquire a player like that while others believe the Cavaliers should extend him.
If the choice is to extend Tristan Thompson, they have to a get a deal done before Friday’s deadline to extend fourth-year players, which seems like a bit of a long shot.
However, according to Jason Lloyd of The Akron Beacon Journal, the Cavaliers are optimistic they will come to an extension with Tristan Thompson.
“As the clock ticks toward Friday’s midnight deadline, there is a sense of optimism the Cavaliers and Tristan Thompson will come to an agreement on a contract extension, multiple sources with knowledge of the talks said.”
The Cavaliers continue to publicly state how badly they want to keep Tristan Thompson.
“We’d like to sign Tristan long-term to the Cavaliers. I don’t think that’s any secret,” owner Dan Gilbert said Wednesday. “I believe they’d like to do that as well. So we’ll hopefully see what happens this week.”
Tristan Thompson, who was the fourth-overall selection in the first round of the 2011 NBA Draft and is still just 23 years old and is obviously a talent but the Cavaliers may wait until the offseason to see what else is out there. Of course, if Tristan Thompson has a big season, that could come back to haunt them.
Tristan Thompson averaged 11.7 points and 9.2 rebounds per game while shooting 47.7% from the field and 69.3% from the free throw line. In his three-year career, he’s put up 10.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game while shooting 47.3% from the field and 63.0% from the free throw line.
