For years there have been whispers suggesting NBA expansion would be something that could happen once the league agreed on their new television deal.

Such an agreement has been made and those in communities seeking an NBA franchise believed it was possible their time had come. However commissioner Adam Silver suggested that despite the new $29 billion dollar television contract, expansion is unlikely for now.

“I think it is possible some teams can be in different markets, but expansion is not on our agenda right now,” said Silver.

“Thirty teams feels right, part of it is not just a financial issue, but a competitive issue.”

It’s hard to deny that the league is dealing with a lack of talent despite having elite level athletes. Simply put the basic fundamentals of the game aren’t focused on like they once were. That doesn’t mean the NBA puts out a bad product by any stretch but how far can you stretch the league if you’re already pressing for talent?

Two cities who have been clamoring hard for an NBA team are Seattle and Louisville, though Seattle lacks an NBA-ready arena. They however do not have recent history of supporting a professional NBA team like Seattle.

Silver has previously mentioned expansion as an idea in Europe though stated such a process would likely need the addition of multiple teams for scheduling purposes.

Could that be a reason as to why the NBA isn’t overly excited with the prospect of expanding state-side?

For now it looks as if expansion is off the table and the lone way to bring a team to another city would be relocation. However that’s not nearly as easy as it looks as Seattle can attest to.
