The New York Knicks are hoping the 2014-15 season will be one of a turnaround that includes a playoff birth, but the team couldn’t even make it through a game without losing one of their major players.

Point guard Jose Calderon, who drew the start in the Knicks’ season opener will now miss the next 2-3 weeks with what the team is calling a right calf strain.

It’s a tough blow for the Knicks who aren’t exactly overflowing with point guard depth.

Jose Calderon isn’t exactly known to be an oft-injured player so it seems to be just a case of poor timing for the New York Knicks who were hoping to gel together during the first few weeks of the season. That won’t be the case now as Calderon will be forced to the bench.

Potentially more scary than the 2-3 week time frame is the fact that strains like this can often linger even after a player returns to the court. Much like a hamstring, calf strains are troublesome in nature and can significantly hamper a player for a considerable amount of time.

Hopefully that won’t be the case for Jose Calderon and the New York Knicks.

It’s not known what the team and head coach Derek Fisher plan to do. They could give Pablo Prigioni the role or perhaps could attempt to play with a big point guard lineup which includes Iman Shumpert.

Shumpert spent time at the point guard position during training camp as did J.R. Smith though you’d have to believe the Knicks would be far more comfortable with Shumpert in that role assuming that’s the direction they opt for.
