The Minnesota Timberwolves were faced with a tough decision in the offseason and finally decided they had to trade star power forward Kevin Love. They dealt Kevin Love to the

Cleveland Cavaliers

in a three deal with the

Philadelphia 76ers

that landed them the No. 1 overall pick of the 2014 NBA Draft, swingman Andrew Wiggins, among others.

After being forced to trade Kevin Love to avoid letting him walk for nothing in free agency, the Timberwolves don’t want to be in that situation again. However, if they don’t get a deal done with point guard Ricky Rubio before Friday, he will become a restricted free agent in 2015. Although they’d still have control over him, being able to match any offer sheet he signs, it could cause bad blood or may force the Timberwolves to spend much more money to retain Ricky Rubio than they’d like.

The two have been far apart on a deal and it didn’t look like anything was going to get done. However, according to Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders, the Timberwolves and Ricky Rubio are close to a deal.

“There are a number of deals that look like they are going to get done,” Kyler explained. “Ricky Rubio and the Minnesota Timberwolves seem close on a multi-year deal some say could clock in around $52-$54 million.”

That’s more than either Kemba Walker or Kyle Lowry got and is a hefty price to pay for a player that struggles to shoot but if the Timberwolves do want to get a deal done, that’s probably what it will take.

In the Timberwolves’ opener, a 105-101 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, Ricky Rubio had 12 points on five-of-12 shooting from the floor with seven assists, six rebounds and seven turnovers. Last season, Ricky Rubio averaged 9.5 points, 8.6 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game and shot 38.1% from the floor, 33.1% from beyond the arc and 80.2% from the free throw line.
