Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barhart shared the news on his Twitter account on Friday afternoon that the university had agreed to the new deal in advance of the Wildcats game against the the Missouri Tigers on Saturday and a stream of tweets followed as he expressed his faith in Stoops and his excitement for the program’s future based on the success Stoops has already had in his first year-plus.

“Mark is guiding our program in the direction we all want it to go and we are proud to reward that,” Barnhart said from his official Twitter account. “I was confident Mark was right for this job when I hired him, but he has exceeded my expectations. From leading a group of young men to recruiting to fundraising, Mark has embraced and excelled in all facets of this job. I am excited about the progress our team has shown on the field, but this is as much about the next five years as it is the last 1.5”

Kentucky is 5-3 this year, three more wins than they had in Stoops’ first year when the Cats went 0-8 in the SEC, the team already has two conference wins and a third will be necessary if the team is going to make their first bowl appearance since 2010.
