The Oklahoma City Thunder saw their season go from bad to worse with the loss of Russell Westbrook for what could be a maximum of six weeks.

The NBA season is officially fully tipped off with all of the teams in the league having played at least one game so far this year. But while the world was obsessed with what turned out to be a mediocre return for LeBron James last night, the real story of the night was Russell Westbrook breaking his hand in the Thunder’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers.

More from NBA

Westbrook fractured his hand and had to leave the game late late night — or early morning depending on where you are — and will now miss rather significant time. The fracture is being called a broken bone now and the prognosis is 4-6 weeks, which means the Thunder will truly have to get creative without either of their superstars.

Oklahoma City is already without Kevin Durant and that was something many saw as an opportunity for Westbrook to shine. Now without both of them, the Thunder face a season in which they could fall off in the West and signal the end of an era in OKC. Durant is already rumored to be going home to play for the Washington Wizards in 2016, and Westbrook may head home to play for the Lakers when his deal is up.

That’s way in the future, but the immediate future isn’t any prettier for a now superstar-less Thunder team.
