In a video released by the league, the suspension was explained.
The hit was delivered a full second after Emelin had released the puck, making the hit late. In addition, Burrows launches himself upwards by propelling himself off his left skate, matching Emelin’s upward movement as the Canadiens skater straightens himself following a pass on shaky footing.
Due to Burrow’s movement upwards, and the way his body’s trajectory matches that of Emelin’s, the league determined that Burrows hit with the intent to make contact higher on Emelin’s body. Therefore, the suspension was delivered, via a phone hearing with the player.
The hit clearly shook up the Russian skater for Montreal, although he was able to return to the game in the third period and seemed to suffer no serious harm.
The suspension will be the first of Burrow’s career. The thirty-year-old skater does not agree with the suspension, although Canadiens head coach Michel Therrien was very vocal about how clearly dirty the hit was.
