As the second year of the current console generation rolls around, Microsoft and Sony continue to wage war on the gaming front.

As we roll into year two of the current generation console life cycle, the one thing that is presently clear is that no one has a firm grasp on how the battle between the Microsoft Xbox One and the Sony PlayStation 4 will turn out. What is known is what has taken place, and where both companies appear to be headed.

A quick look at the hottest stories on N4G right now will bring up back to back headlines of “PS4 vs Xbox One: Sony’s in Trouble Not Microsoft” and “Microsoft’s Xbox One is Looking Like A Lost Cause.” It’s clear that the consumer market is run by fandom of products, and that the long term viability of both consoles remains up in the air.

On the PlayStation 4 front, it is evident that Sony is winning the battle. Sales numbers are staggering, and the early lead is more than manageable. Sony has done a great job of riding out a well designed product, and continuing to keep it at the forefront of the consumers mind.

For Microsoft, the Xbox One’s path was less smooth. The console has abandoned the bundling of the Kinect, early sales numbers were less than promising, and the software backing up the console lagged behind. With the holiday season around the corner, Microsoft has looked to rectify some of that with price cuts and bundles.

This console generation is going to be at least as long as that of the previous one. That being said, the race is far from a sprint, but instead a marathon. While Sony saw early success with the PlayStation 4, it also appears that the console has begun to rest on its laurels.

Some of the biggest titles on the PlayStation 4 have already launched. Console exclusives like The Last of Us Remastered have propelled the system. Uncharted 4 and other must have titles aren’t yet on the horizon.

Conversely, the Xbox One took the opposite approach. Lacking some of the must have titles, they are now beginning to surface for the Xbox One. With Halo: The Master Chief Collection dropping next week, Sunset Overdrive and Forza Horizon 2 having just recently launched, and plenty more firepower on the way, Microsoft is blazing a new trail.

The further the Xbox One gets away from the debacle that was the reversal in decision as to how the console would operate, the better Microsoft can benefit. This holiday represents an integral time period for Microsoft, and will likely pave the way for future success.

Late adopters will likely be upgrading to both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One during the next few months, and Microsoft wants to make sure that the Xbox One is chosen.

The verdict is going to remain out for a while, but a simple business principle is that you must have money in order to make money. Microsoft has plenty of it, and while Sony continues to make it through the sales of the PlayStation 4, the are bleeding cash everywhere else.

Look for this one to be a late round decision, and while Sony has definitely won the battle, Microsoft is looking to win the war.
