The New Orleans Saints are reportedly under investigation for keeping a player they’d cut on team facilities in the hopes of assigning him to the practice squad after he cleared waivers.

When linebacker Todd Davis was waived by the New Orleans Saints, he reportedly didn’t leave team facilities the way most cut players do. It seems he and the Saints had some kind of unwritten agreement to keep him around in the hopes of Davis clearing waivers and signing with the team’s practice squad.

The Denver Broncos threw a wrench in those plans by claiming Davis. Adam Schefter reports that when the Broncos called the linebacker to share the news, Davis didn’t answer and it wasn’t because of a lack of cell reception. He was reportedly in a team meeting with the Saints after he’d been cut.

Schefter notes, ‘it’s possible New Orleans will be facing a stiff fine’, which would be nothing new for the team that had its roster picked apart and its coach suspended for the infamous BountyGate Scandal, in which defensive players were trying to injure opponents for incentive cash bonuses.

While this violation wouldn’t be on par with the previous mess if proven true, stashing Todd Davis does represent a pretty clear breaking of the rules. If the allegations are true, he Saints essentially made an extra roster spot for themselves, which is going to draw the ire of the other 31 teams in the highly competitive NFL.
