A former All-American and Heisman Trophy winner in 2006, Troy Smith was Mr. Everything for the Ohio State Buckeyes during his tenure at the school. Smith eventually was drafted in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens though the quarterback never got much of a chance as he routinely found himself stapled to the bench.
Not long after his three year run with the Ravens, Smith eventually joined on with the San Francisco 49ers for a short period of time and eventually as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers during training camp before moving on to play for the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League where he’s found much more success.
Now he’ll be honored by his alma mater as Ohio State will place Troy Smith’s No. 10 jersey up for all to see as noted by the Buckeyes.
“It’s time to honor one of our all-time greats,” Gene Smith, university Vice President and Director of Athletics, said this week. “Troy’s playing days are over. His accomplishments and achievements as an Ohio State Buckeye are legendary. And we are so proud to be able to recognize this young man by honoring his name and number in Ohio Stadium.”
While Troy Smith’s No. 10 jersey will be honored and visible for all to see, it will not be retired.
Smith, who won the AP’s Player of the Year award in 2006 along with the Heisman Trophy was a two and half year starter with the Buckeyes and tossed an impressive 30 touchdown passes during his final season with Ohio State.
In 24 games as a starter during his junior and senior seasons, Smith recorded an absurd 58 touchdowns and became one of the legends of the Ohio State football program.
