Who were the three stars for this week’s NHL action?

This is the seventh edition of the NHL Three Stars of the Week and we will recognize three players who had outstanding performances during this past week’s NHL action. Check back every Sunday for a new list of three stars for the previous week’s play.

No. 1 Star: Troy Grosenick

Troy Grosenick was called up by the San Jose Sharks to back-up Antti Niemi after Alex Stalock had knee surgery. Grosenick got his first NHL start on Sunday against the Carolina Hurricanes. You couldn’t ask for a better NHL debut – with Grosenick stopping all 45 Carolina shots and pretty much single-handedly leading the Sharks to a 2-0 win. There were several occasions where both teams were wondering how the Carolina Hurrianes didn’t score.

Grosenick’s family was also in attendance and his father’s reaction was one of the best moments we have seen all year:

No. 2 Star: Cory Schneider

So did anyone have Cory Schneider breaking one of Martin Brodeur’s long-standing records in his first season as the Devils official starting goaltender? Schneider made his 20th consecutive start on Friday night, breaking Brodeur’s record of 19 during the 2001-02 season. Both Schneider and Devils head coach Pete DeBoer claimed that it was never the plan for Schneider to start the first 20 games, and the schedule just worked out that way. To add to the milestone, Schneider shut out the Edmonton Oilers 2-0, stopping all 29 Oilers shots. It was Schneider’s second shutout of the season and the 14th of his career. Any time you find yourself in company of a legend like Martin Brodeur, you are doing something right.

No. 3 Star: Ryan Callahan

It’s never easy for a player to make a return to a former home arena after a trade or free agency – it’s even more difficult when that former home arena is Madison Square Garden and you were the former captain of the team. That was the position Ryan Callahan of the Tampa Bay Lightning found himself in on Monday night. Callahan couldn’t have done much better against his former team – he scored two goals in a 5-1 Lightning win over the Rangers. Ranger fans are a pretty ruthless group when it comes to former players – Callahan did his best to keep them relatively quiet. Callahan also had a goal and an assist in last Saturday’s win over the New York Islanders, as well as an assist in last night’s win over the Minnesota Wild.
