After much speculation, Pablo Sandoval has officially informed the San Francisco Giants that he is signing with the Boston Red Sox after playing his entire career with the Giants

One of the biggest free agents this offseason has found a new home as third baseman Pablo Sandoval is leaving the San Francisco Giants to sign a five-year contract worth nearly $100 million with the Boston Red Sox, according to CBS’ Jon Heyman. The Giants reportedly offered Sandoval five years worth $95 million but could have moved that up.

Sandoval, 28, played his entire career with the Giants and caught the final out in the World Series, his third championship with the franchise he spent a decade with and made two All-Star teams after manning the hot corner for the Giants.

Throughout his career in San Francisco, Sandoval battled weight issues to stay close to his listed weight of 245 pounds, but for the better part of his career played much closer to the 275 pound-plus range, but he was a career .294 hitter who hit 107 home runs in his seven big league seasons.

He hit .279 with 16 home rums and 73 RBI last year and his 26 hits in the postseason were the most ever by a player in the playoffs, so he should be a welcome addition to the Red Sox who had the lowest batting average from their third basemen last year.

The Red Sox announced last night they also agreed to terms on a five-year deal with shortstop Hanley Ramirez who can also play third base but is expected to play left field.

With Sandoval gone, the Giants could turn their attention toward free agent starter Jon Lester and devote the money they were planning on giving Sandoval to the left-handed ace and team up with World Series MVP Madison Bumgarner and give the Giants a formidable 1-2 punch.
