Oh Rick Pitino, you’re going to catch some grief for this one.
The Louisville basketball head coach was seemingly having some fun during a press conference after his Cardinals defeated Savannah State 87-26 and when asked about the blowout, suggested he didn’t like to see any team struggle like Louisville’s opponent.
So with the game completely out of hand, Pitino suggested that he tried to make the final line a bit more respectable. How, you ask? By playing the white guys on the Cardinals roster, of course.
“No, I don’t like to see any team struggle like that, I really don’t. We tried everything. I played four white guys and Egyptian.”
There wasn’t any malicious intent here and Rick Pitino was simply goofing around though that’s certain to catch some flack given the nature of the comment. Presumably, the PR director for the Louisville Cardinals likely lost their lunch when they heard the comment even though it wasn’t meant with any harm behind it.
Still, it’s likely something Pitino is going to have to come out and apologize for considering the press it’s garnering.
Yes, he would have been better off keeping his mouth shut and not trying to make a race-inspired joke but it didn’t seem any of his players had any problem with the comment either. Of course it’s not exactly fair to pick and choose when race jokes are deemed acceptable either so it’s likely there could be some punishment coming Pitino’s way though it’s probably going to be nothing more than a slap on the wrist.
