Chris Chelios is most decidedly not a big fan of former teammate Brendan Shanahan

Chris Chelios and Brendan Shanahan may have won a Stanley Cup together back during their Detroit Red Wings days, but that doesn’t mean that they like each other.

While promoting his new book, ‘Overtime’, Chelios got into some detail with TSN 1050 about why he isn’t a big fan of Shanahan.

"There’s not much of a relationship, unfortunately. [Shanahan] is how he is. He’s more like a politician and if you like politicians, then he’s your guy. I don’t like politics and I explained that in my book."

Chelios went further when TSN asked him about Shanahan’s new position as president of the Toronto Maple Leafs — he never actually came out and said it, but made it more than clear he isn’t fond of ex-players skipping straight to the top. Chelios himself is currently serving as executive advisor to Red Wings GM Ken Holland, which is something that many players do before taking administrative positions — Bruins president Cam Neely and Colorado Avalanche president Joe Sakic being two of the most prominent examples.

Of course, Shanahan isn’t the only former player to be placed directly in a position of power; Vancouver Canucks president Trevor Linden had no previous managerial experience prior to his appointment, and former Phoenix Coyotes head coach Wayne Gretzky had never coached or managed at any level prior to his self-appointment with the team.

Chelios didn’t keep it all negative, though; he did allude to Shanahan being a great teammate and an even better player before moving on to other topics.
