The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres have discussed a possible deal for Matt Kemp, but don’t expect the Dodgers outfielder to be moved soon.

Having been jilted at the Yasmany Tomas alter, the San Diego Padres now have to look at other options to ignite what was the worst offense in the majors last season. One option led them to the Los Angeles Dodgers, as the two teams recently discussed a possible deal that would send former All-Star outfielder Matt Kemp from LA.

The Dodgers have long talked of making a move that would free up the logjam in their outfield, as Kemp, Carl Crawford, Yasiel Puig and Andre Ethier competed for playing time last season. Kemp overcame a slow start to hit .287 with 25 homers and 89 RBI in 130 games, his best numbers since he finished second in the 2011 National League Most Valuable Player award chase. The 30-year-old is also the one most discussed in trade talks, as the Mariners have also inquired about him.

When it come to talks with the Padres, it’s all it is: talk. Neither side has come up with an ideal scenario that would move Kemp down Southern California. The door isn’t closed, yet don’t expect it to open up anytime soon.

Both teams are looking for offensive upgrades. While the Padres are looking for anything to perk up their offense, the Dodgers are looking for a stopgap at short in the wake of Hanley Ramirez’s signing with the Red Sox. Top prospect Kyle Seager is close to arrival, but the team would like to keep him down at least one more season.
