The New York Yankees attempted to trade for Jimmy Rollins of the Philadelphia Phillies to replace Derek Jeter.

With Derek Jeter retired, the New York Yankees need a shortstop. Knowing that the Bronx Bombers front office put out feelers and attempted to trade for veteran Jimmy Rollins of the Philadelphia Phillies, though simply could not find a middle ground.

That’s the word from ESPN’s Jayson Stark who reports the two teams exchanged trade talks though the New York Yankees eventually gave up the ghost after the Phillies demanded too much in return.

For those that follow the Philadelphia Phillies (or baseball in general) this shouldn’t come as much of a shock as the Phillies front office has notoriously asked for the moon in recent trade offers, including those for All-Star pitcher Cole Hamels who they’re said to be shopping.

As for Rollins, he is understandably no longer the player he once was though it’s likely Brian Cashman and company felt Philadelphia would likely give up him rather cheaply considering his larger contract and declining skills. That apparently wasn’t the case though as New York simply wasn’t going to pay the asking price.

It’s not known if the two teams will eventually revisit the deal though it’s probably for the best that the New York Yankees moved on considering Rollins isn’t worth much in the current market, despite the lack of free agent shortstops available.

In terms of the Philadelphia Phillies, there has to come a point where they rid themselves of their veteran talent but so far they continue to hang on.
