The Chicago Bears needed a win on Thanksgiving to stay alive in the NFC playoff picture, but the better team walked away with the win in Detroit.

The Detroit Lions have been to the post season once since the 1990s but they’re gearing up to make a run at getting back this season. They could have made it last year had it not been for a late season meltdown but those errors seem to be corrected. Either that, or the Chicago Bears are just that unconvincing as playoff contenders this season.

Detroit needed to rally to beat the Bears but when the flood gates opened they opened hard and fast. Chicago jumped out to a 14-3 lead in the first quarter but it was abundantly clear that they blew their load very early on in the game. Detroit surrendered just three points after that, outscoring the Bears 31-3 on their way to a much needed eighth win of the season.

The win propels the Lions to an 8-4 record while the Bears slip down to 5-7 and on the fringe of the playoff picture. Stranger things have happened but it’s looking like Chicago’s payoff window has closed even if they don’t want to admit it yet.

As for the Lions, they move within a half game of the Green Bay Packers for first place in the division as a loss on Sunday to the Patriots is something Detroit is vey much rooting for.

It’s still a hard path for the Lions to make the playoffs but they’re doing themselves a lot of favors in winning on Thursday as sole possession of first place is just around the corner.
