The Marshall Thundering Herd entered Friday’s game against Western Kentucky with dreams of an undefeated season and a prominent bowl but all that came to a crashing halt after a gutsy call by Hilltoppers head coach Jeff Brohm

Rakeem Cato threw seven touchdowns as he extended his FBS record to 44 straight games with a touchdown pass but that wasn’t enough for Marshall to get past the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers who got eight touchdowns from Brandon Doughty, including this beauty in overtime that set the stage for more late game heroics.

Doughty’s touchdown to Jared Dangerfield came on their second play in overtime after Marshall scored a touchdown on their first possession in the extra frame after trailing for much of the game.

Not wanting to continue this shootout, Western Kentucky head coach Jeff Brohm made the call to go for the two-point conversion and put the hopes of the win on one more successful play from his quarterback and offense that were on fire from the opening kick.

The gutsy call worked as Doughty hit Willie McNeal for the game-winning conversion to win 67-66.

Marshall already clinched a berth in the Conference USA Championship Game and will play the winner of the game between Rice and Louisiana Tech, but their big for a fourth perfect season in school history and a New Year’s Day bowl were lost on the fateful two-point conversion.
