Former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice won his appeal of an indefinite suspension handed down on Sept. 8 after he was initially suspended two games by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Rice is now immediately eligible to return to the football field if a team is willing to take the risk in signing the former Pro Bowl back.
Rice issued the following statement, via Adam Schefter:
"“I would like to thank Judge Barbara Jones, the NFL Players Association, my attorneys, agents, advisers, family, friends and fans – but most importantly, my wife Janay. I made an inexcusable mistake and accept full responsibility for my actions. I am thankful that there was a proper appeals process in place to address this issue. I will continue working hard to improve myself and be the best husband, father and friend, while giving back to my community and helping others to learn from my mistakes.”"
He was fully entitled to the appeals process and the verdict was widely expected to be ruled in his favor as he was suspended twice for the same offense and the fact that first time violators of the NFL’s new domestic violence policy results in a six-game suspension and Rice has been out for 11 games.
There will be a great deal in disappointment in today’s verdict and that’s perfectly understandable, but perhaps they can take solace in the notion that I find it extremely hard to believe any team will take the risk of signing him this season.
Next season on the other hand will be a different story.
