This year’s Iron Bowl matchup between the Alabama Crimson Tide and Auburn Tigers produced the highest ratings for a college football telecast on ESPN in the network’s history

Last year’s Iron Bowl game between Alabama and Auburn was arguably the greatest game in the greatest rivalry in college football but this year’s game managed to top it in one category. Television ratings.

This year’s Iron Bowl earned a 7.4 rating and an audience of more than 13 million viewers to give ESPN their highest rated college football broadcast in the network’s history.

Alabama won the game 55-44 in what was the highest-scoring Iron Bowl in the history of the rivalry. Auburn looked like they might win for the second year in a row after last year’s classic finish of a returned field goal 109 yards by Chris Davis was one of the best endings to a game in any sports in any era, but they lost a two-point lead in the fourth quarter when Alabama scored 21 unanswered points to begin the quarter.

Auburn did not repeat as SEC west champions as Alabama reclaimed their title, but perhaps the two rival fan bases can come together and share this record. And they say ESPN has an SEC bias. Looks like college football fans just have a fondness for the Iron Bowl.
