Sacramento Kings star DeMarcus Cousins could be sidelined for weeks or months with viral meningitis.

Despite having one of the hardest schedules to begin the NBA’s season, the Sacramento Kings emerged with a 5-1 record through their first six games and eventually turned that into a 9-6 start thanks to MVP level play from DeMarcus Cousins.

However the big man came down with what some believed to be a strain of the flu a few weeks back which eventually forced the former Kentucky Wildcats star to be hospitalized.

Now it’s been reported that Cousins has been diagnosed with viral meningitis and could miss six-to-eight weeks depending on long the virus lives.

"According to a source with knowledge of the situation, Cousins is unlikely to play at all this week and it could be weeks or even months before Cousins returns to full strength.  There is no magic treatment.  The virus has to run its course, which can take six to eight weeks in some instances."

Despite a win on Monday night, the Sacramento Kings have struggled without their star player and it doesn’t appear he’ll be returning to the lineup in the near future.

It’s an incredibly tough blow, not only for Cousins who appeared to be a lock for the All-Star game, but also the Sacramento Kings who after years of turmoil and struggles looked to finally have their feet pointed in the correct direction.

Hopefully Rudy Gay, Darren Collison and company will be able to keep the Sacramento Kings head above water until DeMarcus Cousins returns.

Making the postseason in the extremely deep Western Conference was going to be difficult enough with a healthy Cousins, but considering the time he has and will continue to miss, perhaps just finishing the season with a .500 record will be plenty of reason to celebrate.
