The Sacramento Kings are reportedly planning to play 4-on-5 defense occasionally after firing their head coach Michael Malone.

More from NBA

A few weeks ago it was revealed Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadive had brought up the idea of playing 4-on-5 defense.

The thought process behind the reasoning would be that you’d continually have extremely high percentage shots on the offensive end while at the defensive end, you’d still be able to defend at a decent clip. Yes, the opposition would score more points and do so with better efficiency but they couldn’t match your output on the other end.

Such an idea was met with little other than laughs around the NBA but it appears the system will now be employed by the Sacramento Kings (at least occasionally) after firing head coach Michael Malone on Sunday night.

That’s the word from Yahoo Sports who also states Tyrone Corbin will take over Malone’s role on an interim basis.

"The owner played the part of a fantasy league owner, treating the Kings like a science experiment. He shared tactical experiences with Malone about coaching his child’s youth team, and pressed him to consider playing four-on-five defense, leaking out a defender for cherry-picking baskets. Some semblance of that strategy is expected to be employed with Corbin now, a source told Yahoo Sports."

Ranadive has already had his D-League team, the Reno Big Horns experimenting with different styles and tactics which included a player averaging 39 points and the team putting up over 140 per game.

As for the Sacramento Kings, it doesn’t sound as if the plan will be as radical as originally anticipated (literally a player standing near the opposing rim with four defenders on the other side of the floor) but it should be interesting to see what the Kings come up with.
