Which NFL quarterbacks who have won a Super Bowl ring rank among the worst of the best?

It always amazes me how one of the common measures of greatness for an NFL quarterback is the number of Super Bowl championships won. Obviously having a Super Bowl ring adds to the shine of a stat line, but certainly shouldn’t be a telling fait accompli for a quarterback.

If you look at some of the greats at the position who have never won a Super Bowl — and it is an impressive list — there is no possible way you can’t consider these men among the all-time best to ever play the position. Names like Fran Tarkenton, Jim Kelly, Dan Marino and Dan Fouts, who all put up startling numbers for their career, but were on the losing end of one or more Super Bowls.

On the same token, there are a number of quarterbacks who, rather than leading their team to hoisting the Lombardi Trophy, more or less rode the backs of their teammates, serving only as a necessary cog to winning the game.

That’s not to say that these quarterbacks were necessarily bad, but they just weren’t blessed with the greatness of a Brett Favre or Roger Staubach. They didn’t put up the Hall of Fame statistics throughout their careers as a John Elway or Drew Brees. They were just guys who happened to be the quarterback of a great team.

With the playoffs quickly approaching, and the talk of quarterbacks who’ve been there-done that before, I wanted to present my personal list of the worst quarterbacks to ever win a Super Bowl ring.

These five guys — in no particular order other than chronological —  should be very, very thankful to their teammates.
